Company accounts in your B2B Edition control panel interact with customer groups in your BigCommerce control panel to provide your B2B buyers with curated storefront features, such as negotiated pricing, client-specific products, and preferred payment methods.

Independent Companies behavior removes the necessity of a dedicated customer group for each Company account, allowing you to assign a single customer group to multiple Companies, and to set a default customer group for new Companies.

How It Works

B2B Edition Companies establish a business account for each of your B2B clients, and define how their users can interact with the storefront and manage their Buyer Portal. Each Company user has a corresponding customer account in your BigCommerce control panel, which is assigned to a customer group. Customer groups allow you to specify unique pricing for the Company, restrict access to certain product categories, and configure tax zones with Company-specific rates.

Before Independent Companies, creating or approving a new Company account in your B2B Edition control panel automatically generated a new customer group which was applied to all Company users. However, once assigned, Companies and their associated buyers could not be reassigned to a different customer group.

With independent Companies, Company accounts do not automatically generate customer groups. This allows you to:

  • Assign an existing customer group during Company creation
  • Reassign Company accounts to a different customer group
  • Create a single customer group and assign it to multiple Company accounts to manage their catalog access and pricing structure in one place
  • Set a default customer group for new Company accounts
  • Update customer group assignments in bulk via CSV import
  • Provide a Company with your storefront’s default catalog and pricing by unassigning the customer group

The independent Companies data model establishes each customer and Company record type as the “source of truth” for certain information.

For example, the Company account is the only record type that defines a Company user’s customer group, and it automatically corrects any assignment changes made from the customer account. This ensures data consistency between your B2B Edition control panel and BigCommerce control panel, and mitigates the risk of mismatched information.

See the table below to learn more about which record types are the source of truth for specific customer and Company attributes.

* Customer groups are assigned to Price Lists by editing the Price List itself, but the customer group relays its pricing information to the Company account and its users. See the FAQ for more information.

Assigning a Customer Group to Company Accounts

Independent Companies behavior allows you to update a Company’s customer group assignment at any time. There are several different methods you can use to assign customer groups:

Assigning During Company Account Creation

While creating a Company account in your B2B Edition control panel, use the Customer group field to specify which customer group the Company will use.

Select the customer group from the drop-down list, or type the customer group name in the field to narrow your results. If you’ve configured a default customer group, it is preselected in the field.

If you want buyers in the Company account to use your storefront’s default pricing and product category availability, select No customer group.

Updating an Existing Company

To change the customer group for an existing Company account, go to the Companies area of the B2B Edition control panel. Click the Company’s name to view its details, then click the Change customer group field in the Basic Information tab to open the selection pop-up.

The customer groups in the list display their assigned Price List for each storefront. As with new Companies, you can search for specific customer groups by using the search bar, or assign the Company to No customer group.

Pro Tip! Assign pending Company accounts to a specific customer group before approving them to provide buyers with the correct catalog and pricing information from the first time they access their Buyer Portal.

Setting a Default Customer Group

Depending on your business model, you may want to specify a customer group for new Companies. This is especially helpful if you’ve enabled automatic approval for Company account applications submitted by prospective buyers.

To assign a default customer group, go to SettingsGeneral in the B2B Edition control panel and locate the Default customer group dropdown. Select your desired customer group from the list, or select No customer group to provide new Companies with basic storefront products and pricing.

Assigning in Bulk via CSV Import

CSV import the quickest and most efficient way to update Company information in bulk. Importing Company data can expedite certain reformatting tasks like assigning multiple Companies to a newly-created customer group.

To update customer group assignments in bulk, export your Companies to a CSV file and open it in your preferred spreadsheet program. While making changes, take note of the following considerations regarding the required fields:

  • Company ID — This is used to identify existing Company accounts, and must correspond with the correct Company row in the CSV file for a successful update. If you are creating a new Company in your CSV file, remove this field.
  • Customer Group ID — Use this field to assign a customer group to new and existing Companies.
    • To assign Companies to a specific customer group, enter its ID in the field. You can locate the ID by going to the customer group in the BigCommerce control panel and copying the number found in this part of the URL: https://store-xxxxxx.mybigcommerce.com/manage/customers/groups/#/edit
    • To assign Companies to no customer group, enter 0 in the field.
    • To assign Companies to the default customer group, leave the field blank.
  • Other required fields — See Importing and Exporting in B2B Edition for formatting requirements.

After updating customer group assignments and making any other desired changes, import your CSV to the Companies area. Make sure to check the Company Upload Summary Notification in the Dashboard area for any issues that may have occurred during import.

FAQ

Can I request independent Companies behavior in my B2B Edition store?

Yes, you can contact BigCommerce support to have independent Companies behavior enabled. Note that your store must use the Buyer Portal experience to be eligible for the independent Companies behavior.

Once independent Companies behavior is enabled on your store, you cannot revert to the previous behavior. Independent Companies behavior changes how Company accounts and customer groups interact with each other in your store, and reverting to dependent Companies behavior would cause data issues and disrupt storefront and Buyer Portal functionality for buyers.

Does independent Companies behavior affect the Masquerade function for Super Admins?

No, Super Admins experience no changes to how they view the Buyer Portal of their assigned Company accounts.

If I’m using an integration that connects with B2B Edition, does independent Companies behavior affect how it interacts with my store?

Third-party integrations, such as ERPs and CRMs, may require modifications to support the data model for independent Companies, depending on the store data they consume. Contact your integration provider to determine if any updates are needed.

How do I assign a Price List to a Company account?

To designate a Price List for a Company, you must edit the Price List in your BigCommerce control panel. Go to ProductsPrice Lists and click the Price List’s name, then go to the Assignments tab to assign the Company’s customer group to it for the desired storefronts.

If I select “No customer group” for a Company, does it use the default customer group for guest shoppers?

The No customer group option prevents a Company account from using any customer group, meaning that Company users will see the product categories and pricing visible by default in your store. If you have configured a customer group for guest shoppers and want a Company to use its configurations, assign the Company to that customer group directly.

Can I assign specific buyers in a Company account to a separate customer group by editing their customer account?

No, the customer group assignment in the Company account automatically overwrites any changes made to the customer account in the BigCommerce control panel or via the API.

If I delete a Company’s assigned customer group, does it also delete the Company account?

No, deleting a customer group automatically transfers its assigned Company accounts to No customer group. Similarly, deleting a Company account has no effect on its assigned customer group.

Can I use dedicated customer groups for each Company account?

Yes. If you want to provide a unique Price List and catalog availability to each of your B2B clients, create a new customer group in the BigCommerce control panel and assign it to its corresponding Company account in the B2B Edition control panel.
