iDEAL is the most popular online banking payment method in the Netherlands, supported by all the major Dutch consumer banks. Using iDEAL, your Dutch shoppers can pay for orders using their bank credentials or directly from their mobile banking app.

Nearly all online shoppers in the Netherlands know iDEAL, and nearly 95% have used it at least once. It is also a guaranteed payment method, meaning that there is no chance of a chargeback.

 

How It Works

Once enabled, shoppers meeting the requirements will see iDEAL at the Payment step of checkout.

After selecting their bank and proceeding with the order, they will be taken to the iDEAL payment page to enter their banking credentials or pay using their bank’s mobile app.

After the order has been placed, it will appear in your control panel as gateway (iDEAL) or iDEAL (via gateway) in the Payment Method field. Orders placed using iDEAL share the same fulfillment process as typical orders.

Requirements and Limitations

  • Your store must meet the following criteria:
  • Shopper Requirements
    • Shoppers must use an address in the Netherlands at checkout.
    • Shoppers must have EUR selected as their transaction currency.
  • Limitations
    • Manual capture is not supported by any iDEAL integration.

Adyen

  • Additional Setup
    • You must request the payment method to be added to your Adyen account.

Barclaycard Smartpay Advance

  • Additional Setup
    • You must request a Barclaycard representative to enable iDEAL in your merchant account.
  • Limitations
    • Refunds cannot be completed within the control panel. They must be performed from within your Barclaycard account.

Braintree

    • Check the Enable alternative payment methods box and select iDEAL from the dropdown menu in Braintree Settings within your BigCommerce control panel.

Checkout.com

    • Your store must be located in the EU or the UK.
    • Contact your Checkout.com Customer Success Manager or reach out to Checkout.com Support to enable it on your Checkout.com account.
    • Toggle Enable iDEAL in Checkout.com Settings within your BigCommerce control panel.
  • Limitations
    • Transactions must be voided from your Checkout.com dashboard.

Mollie

    • iDEAL must be enabled in your Mollie dashboard under SettingsWebsite Profiles.
  • Limitations
    • The iDEAL payment page will only display in Dutch.

Nexi XPay

    • You must request iDEAL to be added to your Nexi XPay merchant account. To request iDEAL, complete this contract and return it to PPRO, Nexi's Partner.
    • You must enable iDEAL in your Nexi merchant account under the Alternative Payments menu with the ID you received from PPRO.
  • Limitations
    • Refunds are possible only after funds have been received and the transaction has the Accounted status in your merchant account.

PayPal

  • Additional Setup
    • Check the box next to iDEAL in PayPal Settings within your BigCommerce control panel.

Stripe

    • iDEAL must be enabled in your Stripe dashboard. If you don't see iDEAL in your dashboard, contact Stripe support.

FAQ

Are recurring payments supported on iDEAL?

If you have connected iDEAL via Mollie, you can use it in conjunction with SEPA Direct Debit to enable Stored International Bank Account Numbers (IBANs). Stored IBANs cannot be used by the customer on future orders, but it can be used by the merchant for recurring charges, such as subscriptions.

If you have connected iDEAL with a different gateway, it will not support recurring payments.
