Available in seven countries, Mercado Pago has one of the largest user bases in Latin America. With a fast and smooth integration, Mercado Pago allows you to accept local payments through a variety of sources. Comprehensive fraud management minimizes the risk of chargebacks before funds are available in your Mercado Pago account, allowing you to feel more secure when shipping orders.

 

Requirements

  • Store must be based in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, or Uruguay.
  • Store must be transacting in ARS, BRL, CLP, COP, MXN, PEN, or UYU.
 

Setup

If you do not currently have a Mercado Pago merchant account, you will need to sign up:

Once you have created an account, you can set the date and frequency for transactions to be released to your Mercado Pago account. See Mercado Pago's Getting Started documentation for more information on configuring the Business Panel and Dashboard.

Your credentials can be found by navigating to Your Business › Settings › Management and Administration › Credentials in your Mercado Pago account.

To set up Mercado Pago in the BigCommerce control panel, go to Store SetupPayments and select Mercado Pago from the list of Online Payment Methods.

Click Set up next to Mercado Page

You will be taken to the Mercado Pago Settings tab. Enter the Public Key and Access Token credentials from your Mercado Pago account into their corresponding fields and set your preferences. Click Save when done.

  • Public Key — The public key credential provided by Mercado Pago.
  • Access Token — Used for authentication, available from the Mercado Pago merchant portal.

Enter in the Public Key and Access Token credentials into the corresponding fields

Credit Card

Click Enable to provide Mercado Pago's credit card payment method on your checkout, then select the Transaction Type from the dropdown. You can also customize the Display Name shown on the checkout.

  • Display Name — Control how the credit card payment method appears at checkout. We recommend something like Credit/Debit.
  • Transaction Type — Select Authorize and capture or Authorize Only. Authorize Only allows you to capture the funds manually. See Manually Capturing Transactions (Authorize Only) to learn more.

Enable to display credit card fields on the checkout. Select display name and transaction type.

Hosted by Mercado Pago

To provide shoppers with the ability to use the local payment methods enabled on your Mercado Pago account, click Enable. You can customize the Display Name to better match the local payment methods your store accepts.

  • Display Name — Control how Mercado Pago's hosted local payment methods will appear at checkout. We recommend something like Local Payment Methods.

Enable to show local payment methods on thr checkout. Select a display name.

Test Mode

Test Mode is disabled by default.

  • Test Mode — Determines whether your store is in Test Mode, which allows you to safely test your payment configuration without processing live transactions. Use the checkboxes to toggle this setting for Mercado Pago's credit card and local payment method options.

General

Does Mercado Pago support interest-free installment payments?

Yes, merchants can offer installment payments without interest by absorbing the associated financing cost themselves. You would receive the transaction amount in your account as usual, but minus the cost of financing and the credited payment commission. Pricing and Fees

What fees are associated with Mercado Pago?

Merchant fees are dependent on when the funds are withdrawn, with a higher percentage rate tied to earlier withdrawals. Rates and date ranges differ between countries and payment methods; see Mercado Pago's documentation before for more information.

Account Eligibility

What currencies and countries does Mercado Pago support?

Mercado Pago supports the local currency of each country.

  • Countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Uruguay
  • Currencies: ARS, BRL, CLP, COP, MXN, PEN, and UYU

What items are restricted for merchants to sell?

You can find the list of prohibited services, products, and activities included in the terms and conditions agreed to when creating an account. This list will vary between countries.

Can I use the same account for multiple storefronts?

Yes, merchants can use one or more accounts, whichever better suits your business needs.

Transactions

After I create an account, what is the waiting period before I can process transactions?

For many merchants, there is no waiting period and they can start transacting immediately. However, merchants in some countries will need to provide Know Your Customer (KYC) verification, or may need to request an exception. In these situations, merchants must wait for the validation of their information before processing transactions.

How long until the funds are transferred to my bank?

Funds will become available in your Mercado Pago account on the days previously selected during configuration. Once the funds are available for use, you can request to withdraw funds into your bank account.

Will I or my customers receive an additional email or invoice from Mercado Pago?

Yes, both merchants and customers will receive emails containing order information.

Refunds

How soon after a transaction can I perform a refund?

Refunds can be processed immediately after the payment is approved.

Is there an amount of time after which I cannot perform a refund?

Merchants have 90 days after payment is approved to process refunds.

Are there any fees for chargebacks/refunds?

No, there is no fee for refunds or chargebacks.

Additional Features

Are there any fraud filtering options available?

No, however, Mercado Pago monitors all payments to ensure that once a transaction displays in a merchant's account, they can feel confident in processing the order.

Does Mercado Pago allow authorize-only or recurring/subscription payments?

Yes, authorize-only transactions are supported for credit card payments. Recurring or subscription payments are not currently supported.

Does Mercado Pago support multicurrency? (supported by BigCommerce multicurrency)

Individual accounts do not support multicurrency, but a merchant can set up multiple accounts for each country and currency supported by Mercado Pago.

Does Mercado Pago support cryptocurrency?

No, cryptocurrency is not supported.

Troubleshooting and Payment Disputes

Why did my customer receive an error when trying to pay?

Errors can happen for a variety of reasons. Mercado Pago's Support Center can help in identifying and resolving common errors.

How are payment disputes handled?

When a chargeback is received, the merchant is informed of the chargeback. If the merchant doesn't have seller protection, Mercado Pago will ask them to submit any documentation they have of the transaction, so Mercado Pago can present it to the flag. If the dispute is won, the transaction money will be refunded.
