Commonwealth Bank (CommBank) is one of Australia’s leading banks, offering innovative payments technology that gives you access to accept all major global payment types and take your business online. Requirements
- Store must be based in Australia.
- Store must be transacting in AUD.
- You must have a Commonwealth Bank ID.
- Manage Payments and Manage Settings user permissions must be enabled.
Setup
After confirming that your store meets the requirements, call the CommBank Merchant Payments team at 1300 096 392 (8 am - 9 pm AEST Monday - Friday, and 9 am - 3 pm AEST Saturday) to set up your CommBank CommWeb facility to connect to your store.
If you're new to CommBank, you may need to supply extra information to identify yourself and complete the setup process. Have the following information ready:
- Business contact information, including phone and email address
- Australian Business Number (ABN), business structure, and registered address
- Financial information, including yearly turnover, average transaction value, and start date
- Details of every director, partner or trustee, depending on your business structure. This includes birth date, residency, and occupation information.
Once you have applied for CommBank CommWeb facility, you will receive a welcome email containing the details of your Bank ID and your Merchant Category Code.

To set up CommBank in the BigCommerce control panel, go to Store Setup › Payments and select Commonwealth Bank from the list of Online Payment Methods.
Fill out the following fields in the onboarding form:
- Name
- Address Line(s)
- Post Code
- City
- State
- Time Zone
- Merchant Category Code — the four-digit category code provided in your welcome email from CommBank
- Goods Description
- Commonwealth Bank Merchant ID — the sixteen-digit category code provided in your welcome email from CommBank
- American Express Acquirer Link (Optional)
Click Save when you are ready, and you will be taken to the Commonwealth Bank Settings tab. Set your preferences, then click Save.
- Display Name — Controls how the payment gateway appears at checkout. We recommend something like Credit/Debit.
- Transaction Type — Select Authorize & Capture or Authorize Only. Authorize Only allows you to capture the funds manually. See Manually Capturing Transactions (Authorize Only) to learn more.
- Test Mode — Determines whether your store is in Test Mode, which allows you to safely test your payment configuration without processing live transactions. Set to No (recommended) when you are ready to take payments.
- Enable 3D Secure 2 — Adds an additional fraud protection layer to help prevent unauthorized transactions. Click to enable/disable this feature. See 3D Secure for more information.
- Enable Stored Credit Cards — Allows customers to save their credit card details for future purchases. Click to enable/disable this feature. See Enabling Stored Payment Methods for more information.
Please note that the use of stored credit cards to perform payments without the shopper’s active participation can only be used to support recurring payments, defined as subscription-based products or services that are processed in a regular time series.

Where can I access the Merchant Administrator portal?
With CommBank CommWeb (MPGS), separate access to a Merchant Administrator portal is not provided. The BigCommerce order view should reflect the accurate status of the payment.

How do I switch from the CommBank (MIGS) to this integration?
Contact the CommBank Merchant Payments Team at 1300 096 392 (8 am - 9 pm AEST Monday - Friday, and 9 am - 3 pm AEST Saturday) to request a Merchant Category Code. When calling, make sure that your 16-digit Merchant ID from CommBank (MIGS) is on hand.
How do I obtain an American Express Acquirer Link?
The American Express Acquirer Link is provided directly by American Express. Contact their support team for more information.
If you had set up the CommBank gateway previously, you will need to re-onboard to add this information to your merchant account. Disconnect, then go to Store Setup › Payments and select Commonwealth Bank from the list of Online Payment Methods to access the onboarding form and enter the link value.

Transactions
After I create an account, what is the waiting period before I can process transactions?
After your application for a CommBank CommWeb facility is approved, you will receive your credentials in a welcome email. After entering these credentials into the Commonwealth Bank Settings tab, you will be able to process transactions immediately.
How long until the funds are transferred to my bank?
Same day settlement is available on all eCommerce transactions made before 5:30 pm AEST for eligible customers with a CommBank transaction account and a linked CommBank merchant facility.
Will I or my customers receive an additional email or invoice from Commonwealth Bank?
CommBank merchants will receive a monthly merchant statement that includes the details of fees and charges for your CommWeb facility. Please refer to our guide on understanding your Interchange Plus statement.
Refunds
How soon after a transaction can I perform a refund?
Refunds can be submitted in real time after the submission of a transaction.
Is there an amount of time after which I cannot perform a refund?
Original transactions will be held on the CommBank CommWeb facility for 12 months. Refunds will be available to return while the original transaction is held.
Are there any fees for chargebacks/refunds?
There is no additional fee associated for submitting a refund on your CommBank CommWeb facility. Additional chargeback fees apply with your CommBank CommWeb facility, which is to cover investigation costs if a customer disputes a transaction. This fee is provided in your fee schedule. Are there any fraud filtering options available?
EMV 3DS (3DS 2.0) functionality can be configured on the Commonwealth Bank Settings page for more security checks and quicker payment authentication, creating a smoother, more secure payment experience.
Does CommBank allow authorize-only or recurring/subscription payments?
Yes, Commonwealth Bank supports deferred manual capture and stored credit cards. Once saved, stored credit cards can be used with CommBank's Payments API to pay for off-session recurring or on-demand charges.
Please note that the use of stored credit cards to perform payments without the shopper’s active participation can only be used to support recurring payments, defined as subscription-based products and services that are processed regularly over a period of time.
Note that your store must be on a Plus plan or higher to enable stored credit cards.
Does it support multicurrency? (supported by BigCommerce multicurrency)
No, the Commonwealth Bank integration only supports AUD.
Does CommBank support Embedded Checkout?
Yes, the Commonwealth Bank payment integration can be used with Embedded Checkout, however you will need to disable 3DS2.
Troubleshooting and Payment Disputes
How are payment disputes handled?
If a dispute is raised against you, Commonwealth Bank will receive a notification of the dispute and will notify you via email or letter.
