Creating a Test Order

Before you launch your store, or after you've changed your checkout settings, it's a good idea to place a test order from your storefront. This approach allows you to ensure everything functions as you intend and can provide insight in to your customers’ shopping experience.

This walkthrough assumes you have already connected a payment gateway, set up shipping and set up your taxes. Additionally, you'll need to use an existing product or create a test product. We recommend creating a $1 test product if you plan on testing a real payment gateway.

Testing Shipping and Tax Settings

1. To create a test order, go to your storefront as customers would view it. If you're in the control panel, click View Store to visit your storefront.

View Store link

2. Navigate to your test product and add it to your cart.

3. View your cart and click Estimate Shipping & Tax. Enter your address information, then click Estimate Shipping & Tax again. This is to ensure the appropriate shipping methods and taxes are being calculated correctly.

Estimate Shipping & Tax

If you are seeing any of the symptoms below, there may be a problem with how your shipping methods are set up.

  • You receive "Unfortunately one or more items in your cart can't be shipped to your location. Please choose a different delivery address." when checking out
  • You do not see a shipping quote that should show up (e.g. no USPS quotes show up)
  • Trying "Get a quote" when testing a shipping method does not do anything

These symptoms occur when the shopping cart cannot find a working shipping method for the combination of products and shipping address you've entered. Read through the Troubleshooting | Shipping Errors support article to determine what is causing the error and how to resolve it.

4. If you did not receive an error, continue to Testing Payment Gateway Settings to complete the test order.

Testing Payment Gateway Settings

Use the BigCommerce Test Payment Gateway

Be sure to enable the BigCommerce Test Payment Gateway.

1. Go to your storefront as customers would view it. Navigate to your test product and add it to your cart if you haven't done so already.

2. Click Proceed to Checkout.

3. Complete the checkout steps.

4. When you reach the Payment section, select Visa as the Credit Card Type and use card number 4111 1111 1111 1111. Enter any values for name, expiration date, and CVV. Click Pay For Order to complete the test order. You will land on a page thanking you for your order.

Did you know? Optimized One-Page Checkout will auto-detect the card type when a credit card number is entered. See Optimized One-Page Checkout (Early Access) to learn more.

Use a Payment Gateway Integration

Be sure that a payment gateway has been enabled. We recommend PayPal powered by Braintree.

1. Go to your storefront as customers would view it. Navigate to your test product and add it to your cart if you haven't done so already.

2. Click Proceed to Checkout.

3. Complete the checkout steps.

4. When you reach the Payment section, enter your credit card details. Click Place Order to complete the test order. You will land on a page thanking you for your order. If the payment was unsuccessful, checking the System Log in your Store Logs may provide some details for why the transaction failed.

5. If you did not receive an error, continue to Viewing the Test Order to cancel and refund the order.

Viewing the Test Order

Go to OrdersView. The order you just placed should be listed with a status of Awaiting Fulfillment (physical products) or Complete (downloadable products).

Did you complete a real transaction? If you used a real payment gateway, don't forget to cancel and refund the order now that testing has been completed.
