Controlling the quantity of products a customer can order at a time is a helpful tool for managing product profitability.
Wholesale products can be set to bulk quantities only, while stores running flash sale promotions may want to restrict a product to only one per order. Setting a minimum purchase quantity can be particularly useful for lower-priced products that are only profitable when sold at higher volumes.
One of the merchant benefits of running a sale is the added marketing and promotion generated by the offer. By enforcing a maximum purchase quantity (like "limit 1 per customer"), you can ensure that your deal is available to as many shoppers as possible, while potentially lasting longer than otherwise, leading to greater awareness for your brand.
Purchase Quantity and Inventory Tracking
If inventory tracking is enabled for the product and either the minimum or maximum quantity exceeds available stock, the shopper will receive an error and the product will not be available for order.
If a shopper attempts to add less than the minimum quantity to the cart, the amount of product added to the cart will automatically adjust to the minimum quantity amount.
If a shopper attempts to add more than the maximum quantity to the cart, the shopper will receive an error message.

FAQ
Can I set a minimum/maximum purchase quantity for products in bulk?
Yes, via CSV import. Minimum and Maximum Purchase Quantity are importable product fields in the legacy Import/Export experience. Purchase quantity cannot be edited in bulk with the modern Import/Export tool.
Can I set a minimum/maximum purchase quantity for individual variants?
No, products with variants will use the minimum/maximum set on the base product. However, it will apply to each variant. For example, if the base product has a set maximum quantity of 30, then a shopper can purchase 30 of each variant rather than 30 total.
