Fastlane by PayPal is a guest checkout solution for card payments that allows PayPal and Braintree users to leverage PayPal's network to recognize millions of shoppers and provide them with a fast, frictionless checkout using their securely saved credentials in as little as one click.

 

How It Works

Fastlane by PayPal makes it easy for your shoppers to set up a Fastlane profile for frictionless purchases. When a shopper proceeds to the checkout page, selects your credit card payment method, and enters their payment information, they will be prompted to create a profile with Fastlane by PayPal and provide their mobile number.

After completing the order, the shopper will receive an email confirming that their Fastlane profile has been created. When they enter their email address during subsequent checkouts, they will be prompted to enter a verification code sent to their mobile device.

If a shopper has a PayPal account associated with their email address and has not yet created a Fastlane profile, they will be prompted to create one when entering their email address at the beginning of checkout, rather than after selecting PayPal as their payment method. After receiving a verification code to the mobile number associated with their PayPal account, the checkout page will be pre-filled with the shipping, billing, and payment information saved in their PayPal account.

 

Requirements

  • You must be using Braintree or PayPal as your payment gateway.
  • You must be using Optimized One-Page Checkout, or a custom checkout built using:
  • Your store must be located in the United States.
  • You must offer USD as an available transactional currency.
  • Your Braintree merchant account or PayPal business account must be configured in the US.
  • You must have the Manage Payments and Manage Settings permissions enabled in your user account to configure Fastlane by PayPal in your control panel.
  • You must enable credit card payments in your gateway.
  • Fastlane by PayPal is only available for shoppers located in the United States, using USD as their transactional currency.
 

Setup

Fastlane by PayPal is enabled by default after setting up the PayPal payment gateway for the first time, but if you are currently using PayPal or are connecting with Braintree, you must enable Fastlane in your BigCommerce control panel.

 

Using Braintree? You must enable Fastlane in your Braintree account first. Follow Braintree’s Configuration instructions on your production account, unless you plan to test Fastlane transactions before going live.

To set up Fastlane, go to Settings › Payments and click your gateway’s settings tab. Scroll down to the Credit Card area and check the box next to Enable Fastlane by PayPal.

Check the box to enable Fastlane on your store.

After saving your changes, the Fastlane checkout experience will be available on your storefront. To disable Fastlane, uncheck Enable Fastlane by PayPal from the settings tab.

Privacy Settings

When a shopper signs up for a Fastlane profile, their email address is shared with PayPal. Depending on your region’s privacy requirements, such as GDPR or CCPA, you may need to communicate specific information to your shoppers.

Use Fastlane by PayPal’s privacy setting displays the Fastlane logo in the email address field on the checkout page, and hovering over the logo displays PayPal’s privacy disclaimer with a link for more information. If this is unchecked, the checkout email address field instead displays an info icon with a link to your store’s privacy policy, if it is enabled in your Checkout settings.

Advanced Style Settings

Fastlane by PayPal allows you to customize the colors, font, and spacing of the pop-up elements that your shoppers interact with at checkout. Check the box next to Customize Fastlane’s Appearance to view the style settings.

General Appearance

  • Background Color — enter a hex code to specify the color of the pop-up background
  • Font Size Base — the size of basic text, measured in pixels
  • Error Color — enter a hex code to specify the color of error messaging
  • Padding — the amount of space between lines of basic text, measured in pixels
  • Font Family — specify the font family used for basic text
  • Primary Color — enter a hex code to specify the color of Fastlane's checkboxes and links

Form fields

  • Background Color — enter a hex code to specify the color of input fields
  • Border Width — the width of the field border, measured in pixels
  • Border Radius — the radius of the input interior relative to entered text, measured in em units
  • Text Color Base — enter a hex code to specify the color of input text
  • Border Color — enter a hex code to specify the color of the input field borders
  • Focus Border Base — enter a hex code to specify the color of the input field borders when highlighted

FAQ

Can shoppers with a Fastlane profile change their shipping address after verifying with Fastlane at checkout?

Yes, they can click Edit next to their shipping address before placing their order. This opens a pop-up where they can select an address they previously saved to their Fastlane profile, or enter a new one.

Select an existing address, or add a new one.

Can shoppers change the information saved in their Fastlane profile?

Yes, they can update their shipping address, billing address, and credit card details from the checkout page after entering their verification code. They can also log in to their Fastlane profile to edit their information.

Can customers with a storefront account use Fastlane by PayPal for accelerated checkouts?

No, Fastlane is only available for guest shoppers. Registered customers can save their payment credentials to their account for a faster checkout experience.

Why can’t my shoppers enter multiple shipping addresses at checkout?

Fastlane does not support the use of multiple shipping addresses. When you enable Fastlane in your payment gateways settings, the action to enter multiple addresses is not visible at checkout.

As an alternative, shoppers can place separate orders for each shipping destination.

Can customers use Fastlane in conjunction with other PayPal or Braintree payment methods?

No, Fastlane is currently only supported with credit card and PayPal Checkout payments.

Why can't a shopper create a Fastlane profile from their PayPal account?

Fastlane uses the mobile number associated with a shopper’s PayPal account to verify their information and create a Fastlane profile. If the number in their account is out of date or incorrect, they cannot receive the verification text message, and will not be able to create their Fastlane profile.

Can shoppers opt out of creating a Fastlane profile at checkout?

Yes, shoppers can toggle off Fastlane by PayPal after entering their credit card information at checkout, and PayPal will not create a Fastlane profile for them. This remains toggled off for future purchases until they manually opt in.

Can I preview style changes to Fastlane before applying them to my live storefront?

No, the Fastlane styling settings will appear in your storefront immediately after saving your changes.
