Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) is one of the country's leading banks, offering a flexible and secure ecommerce solution for merchants based in New Zealand. With features such as fraud prevention, support for Google Pay, and stored cards, BNZ is a comprehensive and competitive payment choice.
BNZ works with Google Pay. Once enabled, the BNZ Cybersource payment gateway allows you to set up Google Pay, giving your customers even more payment options on the cart and checkout pages.
Requirements
- Store must be based in New Zealand.
- Store must be transacting in NZD.
- Store must use Optimized One Page Checkout.
- Store must require CVV for credit card payments through BNZ.
- For transactions to be processed successfully, 3D Secure must be configured on all BNZ, BigCommerce, Visa, and Mastercard systems (this can take up to 3 days to set up initially).
- Manage Payments and Manage Settings user permissions must be enabled.
Setup
To set up BNZ in the BigCommerce control panel, go to Store Setup › Payments and select BNZ from the list of Online Payment Methods.
You will be taken to the BNZ Settings tab. Click Sign up to create an account.
Already have a BNZ merchant facility and BNZ Cybersource credentials? Click Connect with BNZ, enter your BNZ Cybersource login details, then click Allow to give BigCommerce the necessary permissions to connect to your account. Configure your preferences in the BNZ Settings tab, and you are ready to accept payments through BNZ.
Complete the BNZ merchant facility request form, then click Submit. The BNZ Merchant Sales Team will be in contact with you to complete the merchant onboarding process.
As an alternative to the request form, you can call the BNZ merchant helpdesk at 0800 737 774 or send an email to bnz_merchantpayments@bnz.co.nz. The helpdesk is available Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 5 pm NZT (closed on national public holidays).
Once you have been accepted for a merchant facility at BNZ, you will receive an email from BNZ Cybersource. This email will be sent from donotreply@support.cybersource.com, and will provide you with an Organization ID and a link to the BNZ Cybersource portal, where you will create your own login ID and password. Note that the email's portal link will expire within 24 hours; if the link has expired, it will need to be regenerated by BNZ.
Once you have your Organization ID and have created your BNZ Cybersource username and password, log into the BigCommerce control panel. Go to Store Setup › Payments and select BNZ from the list of Online Payment Methods.
Click Connect with BNZ and enter your BNZ Cybersource login details (Organization ID, Username, Password).
Click Allow on the Permissions page to give BigCommerce access rights to send instructions and perform actions related to payments with BNZ. You will be returned to the BNZ Settings tab.
Set your preferences, then click Save when done.
- Display Name — Control how the payment gateway appears at checkout. We recommend something like Credit Card or Debit Card.
- Merchant ID — Your BNZ Merchant ID (such as 87654321) which you were given when you signed up with BNZ.
- Transaction Type — Select Authorize & Capture or Authorize Only. Authorize Only allows you to capture the funds manually. See Manually Capturing Transactions (Authorize Only) to learn more.
- Test Mode — Determines whether your store is in Test Mode. Set to No (Recommended) when you are ready to take payments.
- Require CVV (credit card security codes) — This option will require users to enter the CVV/CVV2/CVD code for their credit card during checkout, adding extra security to credit card transactions. Enabling this option is required for successful transactions with BNZ.
- Apple Pay — This option allows shoppers using the Safari browser to be able to pay using Apple Pay on your storefront. See Connecting with Apple Pay for more information.
- Google Pay — This option allows shoppers to be able to pay using Google Pay on your storefront. See Connecting with Google Pay for more information.
- Stored credit cards — Allow your registered customers to safely and securely store their credit card details, so that they are able to complete future purchases faster. See Enabling Stored Payment Methods to learn more. Note that you will need to select both checkboxes to enable this feature successfully on the checkout.
- Disconnect — This option allows you to disconnect from BNZ. If you disconnect and then attempt to reconnect, you will be required to re-enter your Cybersource credentials.

Your organization ID, which is required for completing the setup process, will be included in the initial email from BNZ Cybersource.
Pricing and Fees
What fees are associated with BNZ?
Fees may vary depending on your volume, time of contract, services in scope, and other factors. The BNZ merchant sales team or your sales representative will work with you to assess your business' pricing needs.
By default you will be loaded onto BNZ’s BigCommerce package pricing plan, which incorporates all of the main acquirer and gateway merchant service fees charges in an easy-to-follow dynamic structure. Alternatively you can choose another merchant pricing plan from the options available. Note that only the relevant Package, Split, and Interchange Plus pricing is available to BigCommerce merchants:

What currencies and countries does BNZ support?
BNZ supports stores in New Zealand transacting in NZD.
What items are restricted for merchants to sell?
BNZ only restricts products based on general treaties (international arms, trafficking, drugs, etc.). This will be addressed through your merchant facility contract with BNZ as your acquirer and gateway provider.
Can I use the same account for multiple storefronts?
Yes.
Transactions
After I create an account, what is the waiting period before I can process transactions?
The underwriting process for a new merchant account can be 2 to 3 weeks. Once the agreement with BNZ is signed, it is usually a 2 to 5 business day timeline to begin processing transactions.
How long until the funds are transferred to my bank?
BNZ Cybersource authorizes transactions and sends a batch of cleared transactions to BNZ at the end of each day. BNZ will typically deposit funds to merchant accounts within 24 hours.
- If the merchant settlement account is a BNZ account, these funds will be available immediately.
- If the merchant settlement account is with another bank, it may take longer for the funds to become available.
Will I or my customers receive an additional email or invoice from BNZ?
No.
Refunds
How soon after a transaction can I perform a refund?
Merchants can perform a refund after the transaction has settled (typically at the end of each business day). Merchants can void a transaction prior to the transaction being batched out and settled.
Is there an amount of time after which I cannot perform a refund?
Linked refunds are currently restricted to 180 days.
Are there any fees for chargebacks/refunds?
No.

Are there any fraud filtering options available?
Yes, Cybersource applies a fraud detection algorithm specifically designed for BNZ and the New Zealand eCommerce market to all transactions processed, and will act to protect the merchant in the event that any suspicious activity is detected.
Is 3D Secure (3DS) supported on BNZ?
Yes, the integration with BNZ supports 3D Secure 2.0 (3DS2). To enable 3DS, you must be enrolled for 3DS with BNZ, who manages your enrollment for 3DS with Visa and Mastercard.
Does BNZ allow authorize-only or recurring/subscription payments?
Yes, BNZ Cybersource allows authorize-only transactions.
BNZ Cybersource also allows logged-in shoppers to securely store their credit card details so they can complete future purchases faster. Credit card details will be stored securely within a Cybersource ‘token vault’ and are associated with the billing address stored with the customer record on your store.
Note that your store must be on a Plus plan or higher to enable stored credit cards.
Does BNZ support multicurrency? (supported by BigCommerce multicurrency)
No, the BNZ Cybersource integration only supports NZD.
Does BNZ support Embedded Checkout?
Yes, BNZ Cybersource payment integration can be used with Embedded Checkout.
Troubleshooting and Payment Disputes
Why did my shopper receive an error when trying to pay?
As BNZ uses BNZ Cybersource to facilitate the payments, the response code/error message related to the error is discoverable through Transaction response codes within the Cybersource Developer Center.
How are payment disputes handled?
Payment disputes are handled through BNZ as the merchant service provider. BNZ moves the authorized funds from the cardholder’s bank account into the merchant’s bank account. Therefore, BNZ is responsible for reconciling disputes.
