Why aren't my categories showing?

Check Customer Groups

1. Go to CustomersCustomer Groups.

2. If you do not have any customer groups, go to the next section. If you do have customer groups set up, continue.

3. Check the Customer Group for Guests, and make sure it is set to whichever group's permissions match what you want guests to see (e.g. Retail or Default).

4. Edit your customer groups one at a time. Start with the one that you are using when you view the store and can't see the categories (usually Retail or Default).

5. If the customer group does not have Group Access checked, make sure that the missing categories and subcategories are checked.

Check which categories the default customer group has access to

Subcategories are not automatically selected when a parent category is selected, so make sure that the subcategories that aren't appearing have been selected.

6. Refresh your homepage to see if the categories appear. You may need to clear your browser's cache to see the changes reflect.

7. Save your changes. Repeat these steps for all customer groups.

Check Display Settings (missing subcategories)

The following steps will ensure that your display settings are correct. This is only relevant if your main categories are appearing, but your subcategories are not appearing. If this does not apply to you, continue to the next section.

1. Go to Store Setup › Store Settings. Click on the Display tab.

2. Scroll down to Category Settings.

Category Settings under the Display tab in Store Settings

3. Make sure that Category Menu Style is set to Show categories in a fly out menu, which is what allows subcategories to be displayed.

4. Make sure that Menu Display Depth is set to at least 2, or whatever the level of the subcategories that aren't appearing is. See Display Settings for more details.

5. Save your changes.

6. Refresh your homepage to see if the categories appear. You may need to clear your browser's cache to see the changes reflect.

Check Category Visibility

1. Go to ProductsProduct Categories.

2. Locate the categories that aren't appearing. In the case of subcategories, click the + sign to expand the parent categories until you see your category.

3. Make sure that the category has a green checkmark next to it, not a red X. If the category does have an X, click the X to change it to a checkmark. The checkmark shows that a category is visible in the navigation menu.

4. Refresh your homepage to see if the categories appear. You may need to clear your browser's cache to see the changes reflect.

If you have a webpage that is not visible, you can use the same troubleshooting steps on Storefront ContentWeb Pages.

Refresh Category List

Sometimes the database caches categories a certain way, which can lead to them not appearing correctly. In this case, toggling the categories can refresh the database and fix the display.

1. Click and drag a category up in the category list. You will notice the Category page reload.

2. Drag the category back to its original position.

3. Refresh your homepage to see if the categories appear. You may need to clear your browser's cache to see the changes reflect.

Check the HTML

If you've made any changes to your HTML template, the panel that displays the category may have been deleted.

1. Go to Storefront Design › Design Options and click on MoreTemplate Files.

Template files under the More tab in Storefront Design

2. Locate default.html. If it is highlighted, click ActionCompare to see if SideCategoryList.html has been removed. If so, edit the default.html and add it back in.

3. Scroll down until you see the Panels folder, and click the + next to it to expand it. See if any of the following files are highlighted:

  • Header.html — go to Action › Compare to see if SideCategoryList.html has been removed
  • SideCategoryList.html — go to ActionCompare to see what changes have been made
