What is my URL?

Your URL

To view your Bigcommerce store’s URL, log in to your store and click your store name located at the bottom left of your control panel.

Your store name in the control panel will link to your storefront

Your URL is the address that displays in your browser’s address bar.

Example of a URL in a browser.

As your customers navigate to various category, product, or content pages, your store’s URL will update accordingly, allowing your customers to see which page they are viewing at a glance.

Examples:

  • Store URL: www.example.com
  • Category URL: www.example.com/shoes
  • Product URL: www.example.com/shoes/blue-running-shoe
  • Content Page URL: www.example.com/about-us

Your Canonical/Temporary URL

Although commonly referred to as the temporary URL, your store’s canonical URL is actually a permanent, secondary address that is assigned to your store. This address remains the same even when you change your store’s domain, and is needed when using a subdomain for your store address.

To find your store’s canonical/temp URL:

1. Log in to your Bigcommerce Client Area. Note that the email and password to access this site may be different from the ones you use to log in to your store. Unless you have changed them, these should be the original email and password you entered when creating your Bigcommerce store.

Having trouble logging in? Click the Forgot your password? link below the Password field, then enter your Bigcommerce account’s email address to be emailed a password reminder.

2. Click My Accounts.

3. Locate your store in the list labeled Product/Service, then click the View Details link to the right of it.

4. Your canonical/temporary URL will be located in the section marked Your Bigcommerce Store.

URLs and Domains

While your store’s URL changes based on the page a customer is viewing, your domain remains the same as it is generally the first part of the URL, or the “root”. In the examples provided in the Your URL section above, each of the URLs have the same domain of example.com.

  • Store URL: www.example.com
  • Category URL: www.example.com/shoes
  • Product URL: www.example.com/shoes/blue-running-shoe
  • Content Page URL: www.example.com/about-us

For more information on domains, including tips for selecting one for your business, see the Bigcommerce Guide to Domains & DNS.

Secure URLs

Secure URLs are used on pages which require the data being transferred between the page and your browser to be encrypted, such as checkout, and login pages. They always begin with https, and are accompanied by a padlock in your browser bar.

A secure URL in the address bar of a browser

By default, Bigcommerce stores only use secure URLs on pages where customers are entering sensitive data. See our article on Site-Wide HTTPS for information on using secure URLs on every page of your store. Note that this feature is only available on select Bigcommerce plans.
