Using the Auto-SKU Generator (V2)

The Auto-SKU Generator is a tool to help you quickly create and assign SKUs for all of your product option variants. It can save you hours of manually creating a unique SKU for each variant of your products. Once you've generated your SKUs, you can update the inventory manually, or even use the import/export tool to maximize efficiency. To learn more about SKUs, see Options, SKUs, and Rules.

 

Using the new Adding Products (v3)? This feature is only for Adding Products (v2). In the v3 experience, SKUs can still be auto-generated, but the format is not customizable.

 
 

Limitations

The Auto-SKU generator will create SKUs based on the following option types.

  • Color
  • Size
  • Multiple choice
  • Product Pick List
  • Swatch

All options must be marked as required. This setting can be altered by editing the Option Set.

 

Did you know? There is a platform limit of 600 SKUs per product. Consider splitting product options between two or more products, or consolidating your options if a product reaches this limit.

The Auto-SKU generator will not work if:

  • any options have been set to not required. You can change this in your option set settings. Options must be required for the SKU generator to work.
  • the number of options will result in more than 600 variants.

You can determine the number of variants your product will have by multiplying the number of values your options have. For example, if you have a shirt that comes in three colors and three sizes, that's three times three, so it would have a total of nine variants.

If your product will have more than 600 variants, consider making one of your options a category or subcategory, or breaking it down into individual products. For example, if you're selling a car part, consider using Make or Model as categories instead of product options.

Your store must be using our legacy (V2) Adding Products experience in order to use the Auto-SKU generator. Stores using the Adding Products experience based on our Catalog v3 API will find SKUs automatically assigned during the product creation process, so there is no need to use the generator. These SKUs can be edited afterwards to suit your business needs.

 
 

Generating SKUs

The basic steps of using the Auto-SKU Generator are listed below. For more information on specifying how the Auto-SKU Generator should name the SKUs, see Naming SKUs. These instructions assume you have already added product options to your product.

All options must be marked as required. This setting can be altered by editing the Option Set.

Edit your product and go to the Options tab.

Click the SKUs button to the left, then click Generate SKUs. A pop-up will appear.

In the pop-up box, change any SKU name settings, then click Generate SKUs. The pop-up will close, and the Auto-SKU Generator will create SKUs for each product variant. They will be saved automatically.

 
 

Naming SKUs

When naming SKUs, you can select or create a series of elements that combine to create the name. For example, if you are selling an Austin t-shirt that comes in red or blue, small or large, you can set the SKU generator to name the variants AUS-BLUE-S or AUS-RED-L. Each of the subsections (AUS, BLUE/RED, and S/L) is an element (Fixed text, Color, and Size) that you can add.

 

Pro Tip! Human readable SKUs like AUS-RED-L allows you or your shipping manager to recognize what the specific variation is just by glancing at the SKU name.

 

Deleting and Adding Elements

The SKU Generator will have default naming settings. If you don't have any preference for how your SKUs are named, you can leave the SKU name settings as they are. However, you can also change the settings to use a particular naming convention for your SKUs.

To remove the default naming settings, click the x on the right of each element.

Name Elements

Elements can be used separately or in combination when creating your SKU name. Up to 4 elements can be used to craft SKUs.

The elements listed below are universal and will appear as options regardless of what specific Product Options you're using.

  • Unique ID — a random alphanumeric ID string
  • Fixed text — a set text that you define (like "TEST")
  • Product name — the product's name (configurable)
  • Brand — the product's brand name (configurable)

Option values, such as specific colors or sizes, can also be used in SKUs. They will only appear if you have applied that option to the product. These will appear under the Display name you gave the option. These elements can be configured — see Option value elements below.

  • Size — the variant's size
  • Color — the variant's color
  • Swatch — the variant's swatch color/pattern/texture (if you have a swatch option applied)
  • Product picklist — the items in the product pick list (if you have a product picklist option applied)
 

Configuring Elements

Unique ID and Fixed Text can be configured to display in uppercase or lowercase.

Product name and Brand can use the following configurations:

  • First (X number of) letters — uppercase or lowercase
  • Last (X number of) letters — uppercase or lowercase
  • Abbreviate (acronym) — uppercase or lowercase
  • Fixed text — uppercase or lowercase

Option value elements can use the following configurations:

  • First (X number of) letters — uppercase or lowercase
  • Last (X number of) letters — uppercase or lowercase
  • Abbreviate (acronym) — uppercase or lowercase
  • Fixed text — uppercase or lowercase
  • Option value map — specify your own abbreviation for each value within the option (such as "XL" for "Extra Large") — uppercase or lowercase
