What discounts can I offer?

There are many available options for offering discounts for shoppers. Listed below are quick overviews of the discounts you can offer natively on your BigCommerce store.

Discount Types

These are the options found in the Discount Type list:

• Dollar amount off the order total
• Dollar amount off each item in the order
• Percentage off each item in the order
• Dollar amount off the shipping total
• Free shipping

Applies to:

• Categories/subcategories
• Products

Additional Settings

• Limit number of uses (total or per customer)
• Expiration date (after which coupon disables itself at midnight GMT)
• Limit by Location (Advanced)
• Limit by Shipping Method (Advanced)

These are discounts that automatically apply when the shopper's cart meets set parameters or when specific coupon codes are used. To learn more, see Automatic and Coupon Promotions (Standard Editor). Automatic and Coupon Promotions can also show notifications in the cart, product, checkout, and home pages.

Discount Types

These are the discounts listed under the Discount Type drop-down:

Shipping discounts

• Order at least X units of product Y, get free shipping to specific shipping zone
• Orders totaling more than X amount get free shipping to specific shipping zones

Product discounts

• Buy one get one free
• Buy one get something else free
• Buy X units of Product A, get Y units of Product B for $ or % off per unit
• Apply an amount or % off to Product X
• Buy X units of a Product, get $ or % off (one or all) unit(s) of the (least or most) expensive item(s) in the cart

Brand discounts

• Apply an amount or % discount to each item in one or more brands

Category discounts

• Apply an amount or % discount to each item in one or more categories
• Buy X units in (Category A), get Y additional units in the same category free (must be of equal or lesser value)
• Apply a tiered discount to applicable products based on the quantity of items ordered within one or more categories (can be $ or %)

Order discounts

• Apply a % discount to the order subtotal
• Spend at least the specified amount, apply an amount or % discount to the order subtotal
• Spend at least the specified amount, get one unit of Product Y for an amount or % off
• Spend at least the specified amount, get Y% off (one or all) unit(s) of the (least or most) expensive item(s) in the cart

Customer discounts

• Discount amount for repeat customers
• X% discount for repeat customers

Additional Settings

• Duration
• Usage Limits (total or per customer)
• Add messaging on home, product, cart, and checkout pages

Can I apply manual line item discounts?

Manual cart and line item discounts can be added to a checkout using our API.

Is there a way to export orders and show if a discount was applied?

Yes. The Orders Report will list multiple metrics about your store's orders, including those that have had an order-level discount. This report can be exported to a CSV file.
