Managing Domains Registered through BigCommerce

If you've purchased a domain from BigCommerce, there are several actions you may want to take as far as updating contact information, moving the domain between stores, or renewing or transferring your domain.

The process of managing your domains differs depending on which billing and accounting system your store is using. Determine which billing system your store is using and choose the corresponding set of instructions below.

To manage a domain registered through BigCommerce:

1. Log in to your Account Dashboard, then click Domains on the upper left side of the page.

2. Click Manage to the right of the domain you’d like to manage.

Domain Details

In the Manage area, you will see some details about the domain:

  • Name — the domain name
  • Store — the store the domain is currently assigned to (if none, this will be "Unassociated")
  • Expiration Date — the date the domain name's registry expires. See Auto-Renewal
  • EPP Code — an authorization key provided by a registrar; used to authenticate domain name transfers to a new registrar

Removing or Replacing a Domain

Domains currently assigned to a store will provide the options to remove or replace the domain.

Removing a Domain

If your domain is currently applied to a store and you want to disassociate it or return the store to its former .mybigcommerce.com address, click Remove Domain. The domain will be disassociated and the store will be returned to the .mybigcommerce.com domain it was using before the domain was applied.

Remove domain

Replacing a Domain

If your domain is currently applied to a store and you want the store to be using a different custom domain, select a different custom domain from the drop-down and click Replace Domain.

Applying or Terminating an Unassigned Domain

Domains not currently assigned to a store will provide options to apply or terminate the domain.

Applying an Unassigned Domain

If you've purchased a domain through BigCommerce that isn't currently applied to any stores, you can apply it by selecting the store and clicking Apply Domain.

Apply store

If that store already has a custom domain applied to it, that domain will be unassociated from the store and replaced with this one.

Terminating an Unassigned Domain

You may choose to terminate any domain you have purchased that is not assigned to any store. Releasing a domain immediately terminates the domain and releases it to the Registrar. This action cannot be undone.

To release a domain, click Terminate Domain.

To unassign a domain from a store while keeping the domain, see Changing Your Custom Domain to a .mybigcommerce.com Subdomain.

Enabling Registrar Locking

Locking your domain prevents unauthorized transfers of your domain name away from BigCommerce. We recommend that you leave the registrar lock enabled unless you wish to transfer the domain name to another registrar. This setting is located under Registrar Lock.

Automatically Renewing Your Domain

The Auto-Renewal setting determines whether domains will be automatically renewed 14 days before they expire. We recommend auto-renewing your domain so that no one is able to purchase your domain after its expiration.

Auto-renew

If a domain is not set to auto-renew, you will need to manually renew it before it expires.

Setting Your Domain's Nameservers

If you want to keep your domain registered with BigCommerce but point it elsewhere, use the Nameservers area to enter the new platform's nameservers, then click Update Nameservers. If you need to reset your nameservers back to BigCommerce, you can do so by setting them to ns1 - ns3.bigcommerce.com, as pictured below.

Updating your Contact Information

When a domain is registered, the registrant must include contact details. These contact details are submitted to a WHOIS database and are only used for contacting the domain owner when necessary. You can view and update your domain's contact details under Contacts.

  • Registrant Contact — The individual or organization with the rights to use or "owns" the domain.
  • Administrative Contact — The individual to be contacted for administrative, non-technical matters. These include legal matters, change of ownership and more.
  • Technical Contact — The individual to be contacted for technical matters relating to the domain.

The list of email addresses listed in the contact dropdowns is pre-populated from the contacts associated with your account. To update the list, click Manage Contacts.

Updating WHOIS/Contact Information

The WHOIS service is a public directory of contact information of registered domain name holders. When you register a domain, your information is added to the directory in association with that domain. To update this information, click Update WHOIS/Contact Information.

Note that updating your domain's contact information will initiate the domain verification process, which must be completed for your changes to take effect. See WHOIS Contact Verification for more information.

Update any of the Registrant, Admin, or Tech contact information, then click Save Changes at the bottom of the page.

If you need advanced features such as domain privacy, see Advanced Domain & DNS Features.

To point your domain elsewhere and keep the registration with BigCommerce, update your domain's nameservers, then click Save Changes. Note that doing so will impact any email accounts associated with your domain. Be sure to reach out to your new domain host for assistance with configuring your domain's MX records before making this change.

You can also reset your nameservers back to BigCommerce by clicking Revert to BigCommerce Nameservers.
