Setting a Sort Order for Products

By default, the products in a category are listed with Featured Products first. However, BigCommerce gives you the flexibility to specify the exact order in which your products display in their category pages. Each product is assigned a sort order, which controls its display order within the category page. You can edit the sort order through either the Control Panel for BigCommerce, or through CSV Importing/Exporting.

All products are given a sort order of 0 by default. Products that have the same sort order will display in the order set by the category's default sort order.

Editing through the Control Panel

1. Go to ProductsView, then click the name of the product you'd like to edit.

2. Click the Other Details tab.

3. Scroll to the Sort Order field.

This is where you can specify the specific sort order of your product. All products are given a default value of 0. The lower the number, the further up it will display.

If you're rearranging only a few products, using negative numbers will help you reorganize your products best. If you're completely rearranging the products in a category, then you can start with 0 and increase the value of the rest of your products. We recommend using increments of 10 to make it easy to insert new items in the middle later on.

4. Save your changes.

Editing with a CSV

1. Find the list of products you wish to edit either by using the advanced search, a pre-made view, or going to a category and viewing the products in it. Then, select them all, and export them. If you export your products in this way, you will only be able to edit 100 products at a time. If you need to edit more than that, simply export your products (ProductsExport Products), and then sort using your spreadsheet program.

2. In your CSV, find the Sort Order column, and change the value for those products so that they are in numerical order for how you want them to display on your category page.

3. Once you have re-ordered your products, Save your spreadsheet. You may want to perform a Save As... and name it something new so that you have a backup of these products before the sort order change.

4. Login to your store's control panel.

5. Click on Products and then Import Products.

6. Click the checkbox next to Yes, I export these using the 'Bulk Edit' template, and find the file on your computer.

7. Click Next.

8. Make sure the field names match, and then click Next.

9. Click Start Import.

10. When the import finishes, your products should now display in the correct order.
