Using Microdata to Improve Search Results

What is Microdata?

Microdata (sometimes referred to as structured data, schema code markup, or rich snippets) is data embedded in a web page that provides specific information that is easily interpreted by search engines and other web services.

As an online merchant, having this data included in your product catalog allows web searching services like Google and Bing to present your product listings in an easy-to-read and user-friendly format, and provides a more engaging and richer browsing experience for the shopper. Products listed in search engine result pages can present details like price, availability, and review rating.

Microdata allows for rich snippet information in search engine results pages, like price, availability and review rating.

Industry research has demonstrated that these enhancements improve both click-through and conversion rates. Not only does this help your listing stand out, it empowers shoppers to make confident, informed decisions and encourages them to take action.

Microdata on BigCommerce

Themes featured in the BigCommerce Theme Marketplace include structured data for product pages out of the box. No additional action is required to enable structured data.

Microdata pulls from information included on the product page. Ensure you have filled out as much as you can on your product details pages. Microdata is pulled from this information.
